Posted on April 5, 2023April 6, 2023 By Despite Pain

A gluten-free diet for anyone with coeliac disease is not a choice. It’s a necessity. But a gluten-free diet is also very expensive. The charity Coeliac UK is running a campaign just now to try to make gluten-free food more affordable and accessible. I hope that policymakers and the food…

Posted on May 7, 2022March 14, 2023 By Despite Pain

Life changes when you are diagnosed with coeliac disease. All the eating habits you’ve developed throughout your life have to change because you must cut out gluten completely. Gluten has to disappear but, in some ways, so does spontaneity because you can’t just nip into the local cafe for a…

How to Avoid Cross-Contamination if You Have Coeliac Disease

Posted on February 5, 2022February 19, 2022 By Despite Pain

Changing to a gluten-free diet after being diagnosed with coeliac disease sounds simpler than it actually is. It means learning to read food labels which can be fairly challenging, especially initially. But one of the most difficult aspects of coeliac disease is learning how to avoid cross-contamination. The tiniest crumb,…

Myths About Coeliac Disease – Sorting Facts From Fiction

Posted on May 10, 2021March 14, 2023 By Despite Pain

When I was first diagnosed with coeliac disease, I knew nothing about it therefore I had to quickly learn as much as I could. Along the way, I discovered that there were a lot of myths about the condition. Worrying myths which, sadly, some people believe to be true. Since…

Review of Glebe Farm Gluten Free Oat Products (Coeliac Safe)

Posted on March 5, 2020March 14, 2023 By Despite Pain

Oats can be so confusing when you have coeliac disease. They’re naturally gluten free, but most are not gluten free because they are grown and processed beside other grains, therefore they are contaminated. But, thankfully, we don’t need to miss out, because some oat farmers, like Glebe Farm in Cambridgeshire, produce gluten free oats which are safe for coeliac sufferers.

Glebe Farm has very kindly gifted me with some of their products so that I could write an honest review here on my blog.

How to Understand Food Labels if You Have Coeliac Disease or an Allergy

Posted on February 19, 2020March 14, 2023 By Despite Pain

Whether you have coeliac disease, a food allergy or intolerance or you are just sensitive to a particular food, it’s important to understand food labels. This post has advice about food labels in the UK, but other countries have similar laws and standards.

If you are new to a health issue which requires you to follow a special diet you will need to be able to read and understand food labels at the supermarket. Keep your reading glasses at the ready and ensure you have plenty of time to spare because your shopping trip will take longer than normal….

Coeliac Disease Gluten free haggis - not just for Burns NIght. Plate with haggis, neeps and tatties on a white plate with red and black tartan background

Gluten-Free Haggis — Not Just For Burns Night

Posted on January 22, 2020January 22, 2026 By Despite Pain

It’s Burns Night on January the 25th – the night when Scottish people celebrate the birthday of Rabbie Burns, the country’s national bard. Traditionally, people celebrate by reciting Burn’s poetry, eating haggis and probably having a wee dram or two. And this is where my problem arises. The wee dram is completely off-limits because of my medication and since haggis isn’t gluten free, it’s been off the menu since my coeliac disease diagnosis…

What is Life Like With Coeliac Disease?

Posted on December 13, 2018April 6, 2023 By Despite Pain

In December 2017, I was given a diagnosis of coeliac disease, which meant cutting out all gluten from my diet. It came as quite a shock at the time as I didn’t have the typical stomach problems (often diarrhoea, nausea and bloating) which tend to come with coeliac disease. While…
